Questions

What is a .pub file?

A .pub file is a document made with Microsoft Publisher: a flyer, newsletter, menu, invitation, card or brochure.

Why can’t I open my .pub file any more?

Microsoft removed Publisher from Microsoft 365 on 1 October 2026, and support for the bought-once versions ended on 13 October 2026. It is no longer part of Microsoft 365, and no other Office program opens .pub files. Pubwork opens them in any web browser.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The whole program runs inside your browser, so the file stays on your computer. Nobody else can see it.

Will it look exactly the same?

Very close. Fonts that came with Windows are shown with free fonts of the same size and width. Fonts embedded in the file are used as they are. The panel on the right lists anything shown differently.

Which Publisher versions work?

Files from Publisher 97 up to Publisher 2021 and Microsoft 365. Files from Publisher 95 and older can’t be read.

Does it work on a Mac, Chromebook or iPad?

Yes. Pubwork works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on any computer or tablet. Nothing needs installing.

Can I change the text?

Yes. Double-click any text to type, drag pictures and shapes to move them, and add your own text, pictures and shapes. Save it as a Pubwork file to keep working on it later.

Can I print business cards, labels or a booklet?

Yes. Click Print and choose several copies on each sheet, a label sheet (Avery and others) or a folded booklet. You can also save a PDF with crop marks and bleed for a print shop, or a Word or LibreOffice Draw file.

How do I open a .pub file without Publisher?

Open Pubwork in any browser and drag your .pub file onto the page, or click Open. It shows in a few seconds, ready to read, change, print or save as PDF, Word or pictures. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android.

Does Pubwork work without internet?

Yes. After your first visit, Pubwork keeps working when you are offline, in the same browser. Your files never needed the internet anyway: they are read on your own device.

Is Pubwork open source?

Yes. Its code is public under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, so anyone can check that files are never uploaded, or run their own copy.
